seconds like years

there was the period
when life
seemed an eternity to me
when i used to lose
the count of hours
and the days
with the girl across the road
whom i believed
to be the only love
and i did not understand
that she is a simple neighbor
and now
i am counting in the mind
the women in the past
and i am also counting the strikes of the clock
to see if the minute
still lasts
sixty seconds
