In 2016, a photo created a huge emotion on the internet. Academician Professor Doctor Leon Dănăilă, rests his eyes and soul on the subway, on the way home. He had left the hospital where does works, even though he is 82 years old. The photo was taken by Marilena Stancu and was posted on Facebook by Academia Cațavencu. In almost two days, the photo registered 94000 shares, 118000 likes, 3100 comments.
In the same year, BBC Inside Out traveled to Romania and spoke to neurosurgeon Prof Leon Dănăilă.

Leon Dănăilă was born on July 1, 1933, in Darabani, Botosani, Romania.

He is a member of numerous Academies, International Scientific Societies. He holds 18 patents for inventor and 10 for innovator and is the author of 54 specialized books and atlases.
Leon Dănăilă wanted to sell his house to publish a specialized book.
Leon Dănăilă: “I’m the poorest doctor in the world. If I had to start over, I would do everything I’ve done so far. I would stay in Romania”.
On the front door of his office, he writes that all consultations are free.

In over 55 years of professional neurosurgical activity, he has performed over 40,000 surgeries. A large number of the most complex neurosurgical operations with a significant reduction in mortality have propelled it among the world’s largest neurosurgeons.

In the years 1946–1947, there was a terrible famine. He saw many people dying of hunger and untreated disease.
He says he is ashamed to tell the story, but as a child, he was a beggar to save his family from death. He walked a distance of 20–30 kilometers from the house, in a place where he had heard that there were still cereals and some food. Then it was decided that he would become a doctor and save lives, confessed the doctor in the show “Spiritual Reality — Dr. Leon Dănăilă. From the beggar, in the top 500 geniuses of the XXI century”, George Grigoriu Channel.
Leon Dănăilă: “In life, it is important to do something good. Something for others, don’t be selfish to do just for yourself”.

In 2006, Leon Dănăilă lost his wife, after a marriage of almost half a century.
Academician Leon Dănăilă took flowers to his wife’s hospital every day, even when she was unconscious.
He did not marry after the death of his wife. He took refuge at work.
“Everyone has their own psychology. Family relationships differ from individual to individual. But without love you do nothing in the profession or in marriage”, Leon Dănăilă told A7TV’s “People and Opinions.”

This year, Leon Dănăilă turns 88 and 60 years of continuous activity.
Every day, at 6 o’clock in the morning, he was present in the surgery clinic. Sometimes he even came at 5 o’clock in the morning.
Leon Dănăilă: “Even if I performed the same surgery a hundred times, I’m thinking whole night about the intervention scheduled for the next day. I repeat it in my mind”.

In February 2021, I am watching a televised interview with Leon Dănăilă. He smiles, stretches out his hands, and shows that not a finger is shaking. He says that sight is very important in this job. Then he adds that he now sees as he saw when he started working.
Leon Dănăilă: “My secret: I liked what I did”.
